Sailboat
A 35-foot sailboat was hard aground on Avalon's beach last week, after its anchor broke loose. Photo provided by Sea Tow Cape May.

A 35-FOOT SAILBOAT washed onto Avalon's beach late last week, when its anchor failed to hold it overnight while the captain was sleeping. The sailboat was heavily damaged in the surf and unable to be rescued via the water, so Sea Tow Cape May and Northstar Marine partnered to mobilize heavy equipment on the beach in order to remove the vessel.

MARKET STATS: Sales have been held back by extremely tight inventory, which has continued to decline. March's median sale price was up 22% over last year, as a result. For a detailed look at the market, see the latest Long & Foster Market Minute report.

64,000 CUBIC YARDS of sand will be moved to Avalon's north-end beaches as part of a sand back passing project. The $677,000 project will take place this spring, and will replenish beaches between 9th and 16th Streets that were eroded during the winter storm season. Avalon has conducted many prior back passing projects in-house, using rented heavy equipment, but appropriate equipment was not available for this project, so the borough contracted with Mount Construction of Berlin, NJ. Mount performed a similar project for the borough ten years ago.

NEED A CONTRACTOR RECOMMENDATION? I DO TOO! I'm always happy to provide a referral for a contractor or other service provider. But I'd love to hear from you about any contractor that you'd like to recommend to others! Have you had a good experience with a landscaper? Do you have a reliable electrician? Do you have a favorite painter? Drop me a quick reply and let me know! It helps me keep my list of recommended service providers up to date--and rewards that service provider for the good work they've done in the past. Your input is appreciated!

Beach Pier
Ahhh! That first peak at the ocean as you head to the beach!

STONE HARBOR BOULEVARD is now restricted to 35mph, instead of 50mph. New speed limit signs were installed last week shortly after the repaving of the road surface was completed. The upside for those entering and leaving the island? A chance to enjoy the view of the scenery on both sides of Stone Harbor Boulevard, while enhancing safety for those who live along the roadway! Avalon Boulevard, which has no homes directly adjacent to it, remains 50mph.

AMERICAN AIRLINES recently announced that it will add bus service from Atlantic City Airport to Philadelphia Airport, where bus passengers can connect with their flights. While American did not announce plans to fly from Atlantic City, the less crowded facility and easier parking offer an additional option to those travelling to and from the shore by air. Once parked at Atlantic City Airport, travelers can relax on the bus to Philadelphia Airport.

"WILDWOOD DAYS" singer Bobby Rydell passed away last week at the age of 79. His 1963 hit, Wildwood Days, was a Billboard 100 hit for 9 weeks, reaching Number 17. To this day the tune is synonymous with a visit to the Wildwood Boardwalk, and is often used in promotions and played on the boardwalk speaker system. The Philadelphia-born singer often performed his famous song as a tribute to his favorite shore town. Need to hear that catchy tune again?

Avalon
Trees, grass, and flowers will all be in full bloom shortly!

MARCH COMES IN LIKE A LION... and along the beach, cool weather tends to hang around a long time in the spring, due to cold ocean water. But now that April is upon us, that "lamb" we've all been waiting for will soon be here! Lawns are greening up, trees are budding, and flowers will soon be blooming!

RISING GAS PRICES may boost shore traffic this summer according to Vicki Clark, president of the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve always been a drive-to destination...a 300-mile radius is our primary customer base,” Clark said at a recent talk. Avalon, Stone Harbor, and the rest of the Southern New Jersey shore are within a one-tank radius of a huge portion of the population in northeastern states. While this has always been a factor in the popularity of Cape May County shore homes and vacations, rising gas prices make nearby getaway destinations even more attractive.

MAKO SHARKS cannot be harvested for the next two years, in order to protect the overfished species, and allow stocks to rebound. If caught, mako sharks must be returned to the water--live or dead--and cannot be retained. Mako sharks have been under heavy fishing pressure for years, as they are popular with both sport fisherman and commercial fisherman. Mako sharks often put up a thrilling fight for sport fisherman, and they are highly desirable on the dinner table, too. The two-year mako ban applies to all Atlantic states.

THE STONE HARBOR BOAT RAMP at 81st Street will be closed through April 15th for repairs. The ramp at Avalon's Bay Park Marina at 54th Street is the closest option for those launching or retrieving boats.

TAX FREE RENTAL INCOME? Did you know you can rent your shore home and collect two weeks of rental income tax free? It's a great way to earn income to cover some expenses, while still keeping the bulk of the summer for your own usage. If you'd like to take advantage of this great opportunity, please call or email me!
