96th STREET BRIDGE UPDATE:
Stone Harbor has provided an update on the 96th Street Bridge
replacement project. Construction is expected to begin in the fall
of 2026, with "work taking place outside of the current bridge
footprint. Normal bridge operations will continue during this phase,"
which will last until Summer 2027, according to the update. In the
fall of 2027, the old drawbridge span will be removed, and a temporary
bridge span will carry vehicle traffic for Summer 2028. During the
2028-2029 off-season, the new bridge span will be installed, and final
testing will occur during summer 2029.
SUMMER MUST BE CLOSE! Miss Avalon has been out fishing, and
Avalon Lady will begin fishing May 4th, the first day of fluke season;
lawns are green and flowers are blooming; lifeguard boats are being
readied for the beach; restaurant and shops are open; Avalon's north-end
beaches are being replenished with sand; painters, landscapers, pool
companies, and contractors are working feverishly to complete projects;
activities, events, and concerts are beginning to fill the calendar.

Ahhh! On a warm spring day a tugboat and barge glide by on the
horizon, off Avalon's Fishing Pier.
AVALON'S SAND BACK PASSING project
continues. As of Monday morning 10,000 cubic yards of sand had
been relocated on the 10th to 14th Street beaches. Work continues
nightly, but will pause for the weekend. A total of 63,000 cubic
yards are expected to be moved to north end beaches, replenishing them
for not only recreational use, but to provide storm protection.
US NEWS has named the Best Beaches
in New Jersey for 2026. Topping the list at #1 is Stone Harbor,
featuring "miles of soft sands and an easygoing atmosphere," according
to the article. Runner up was Cape May; Avalon (#8) and Sea Isle
City (#9) were not far behind! Cape May County is blessed with
beautiful beaches with soft white sand!

NEW AT THE ZOO: "Leonardo DiCatprio" and two Capybara pups!
The Cape May County Park & Zoo has announced two new arrivals just in
time for the 2026 summer season. First, "Leonardo DiCatprio,"a
Eurasion Lynx has been relocated to the Zoo after residing at another
location for the past few years. Leo was originally a pet that was
rescued after wandering the streets, according to the Zoo. Two
new capybara pups were born on April 14th. Mom, Buttercup, and her
pups can be seen periodically from the bridge at the capybara habitat,
but they will be off exhibit often to give them some respite from
crowds,” the Zoo said in a statement. If you've never
visited the Zoo, it's one of Cape May County's treasures, and worth
making the trip for those young and old. It's free (donations
appreciated) and open daily!
WATCH
OUT FOR TURTLES! The Wetlands Institute reminds us that
diamondback terrapin hatchlings are starting to emerge as the weather
warms. They offer the following tips to best protect the
hatchlings:
Most are traveling from winter nests to the
marsh.
They're tiny but wild.
Please admire them without touching
them.
If you see one in immediate danger, help only if it is safe for
you to do so.
Move it to the closest vegetation for cover.
Refrain
from entering traffic or risky spots to reach a hatchling.

Heavy equipment is staged on the Avalon beach just south
of the Avalon Fishing Pier. More large dump trucks
were expected to arrive earlier this week, as the sand
backpassing project gets underway.
BEACH UPDATE: Avalon's
backpassing project has begun, and early this week sand
was being stockpiled at the borrow area. Four
large dump trucks are already on site, and three
additional trucks were due to arrive earlier this week.
Those trucks will work during overnight hours to move
sand to the north end beaches in need of replenishment.
Meanwhile, federal emergency funding for a hydraulic
beach fill was announced last week; both Avalon and
Stone Harbor are anticipating that a $46 million
hydraulic beach fill will be conducted by the US Army
Corps of Engineers, at no cost to either borough.
No start or finish dates have been established for the
hydraulic fill, but the some or all of the work may take
place during the summer months.
IT WAS MORE EXPENSIVE to
purchase a house in the early 1980s, versus today, when
comparing prices and interest rates, and adjusting to
today's dollars, according to a Wall Street Journal
analysis. The high interest rates of the early
1980s - which peaked above 18% - made it "more expensive
in today's dollars to buy a home during that period, and
pretty substantially so," said Odeta Kushi, deputy chief
economist at First American, a provider of title and
settlement services. The article goes on to
compare the incomes, college tuition, student loans, and
auto purchases of Baby Boomers and Millennials.

to find out your pool pump won't wake up from its winter

to eliminate them!

BEACH FUNDING ANNOUNCED:
As Avalon prepares to get
underway with a locally funded sand backpassing project, US
Congressman Jeff Van Drew has announced that South Jersey will
receive $99 million in federal funding for future beach
replenishment. Although no specific timing of projects is
known yet, Ocean City, Strathmere, Sea Isle City, Avalon, Stone
Harbor were specifically cited in an email Van Drew sent to
constituents earlier this week.
BEACH SWEEPS take place this
Saturday in both Avalon and Stone Harbor! Volunteers are
needed, and will spend the morning removing trash and debris
from our local beaches.

Carney announced a summer-long series of patriotic events
celebrating America's 250th birthday. Carney is also

Warm summer evenings aren't far away! Meanwhile, why not check
out some of the unique events and attractions available both on
the island and around the county? Above, The Wetlands Institute
is just one example, among many. See below for more ideas!
63,000 CUBIC YARDS OF SAND will
be moved to Avalon's 9th through 15th Street beaches, and the
work is expected to begin the week of April 13th. A borrow
area between the Avalon Fishing Pier and 40th Street will be the
source of sand; trucks will haul it to the north end to help
rebuild dunes, beach paths, and the beach. Work is
expected to occur during the hours of 8pm to 6am, Monday nights
through Thursday nights. During work hours the beaches
from 9th Street to 40th Street will be closed to the public for
safety, and will be reopened each morning. Work will pause
for the Memorial Day Weekend, but will resume the night of
Monday, May 25th, until completed. If sand remains
available, the Borough may extend the work from 15th Street
south to 22nd Street. The "duration and length of the
project will remain fluid," according to the Borough.
OH MY, IT WAS NICE earlier
this week, as Mother Nature treated us to another taste of warm
weather. It won't be long now—grass is greening up, trees
are budding, and March is behind us! With more than 12
hours of daylight each day, the ocean is slowly warming up, and
the whole island is coming back to life!
AROUND THE COUNTY, the
number and frequency of events is increasing each week.
Lectures, dune grass planting, job fairs, celebrations—you'll

below. Aside from the standard "go to" activities we all
enjoy here (the beach, fishing, boating, shopping, dining),
there are so many varied activities to enjoy around the county
most of the year. Take a look at my list below and choose

HAPPY
EASTER! Around the island this weekend and across
the area you'll find Easter related events such as egg hunts,
photo ops with the Easter Bunny, church services, Easter Brunch
and Easter Dinner.
USCG Eagle, "America's Tall Ship", at the Coast Guard pier in
Boston;
yours truly, climbing the rig; 100 miles out to
sea, under sail, makes for a very happy sailor!
A NOTE FROM THE SEA: Last week I had the extraordinary opportunity to sail aboard US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle, for six days of sail training with her professional Coast Guard crew. Tall Ships America, of which I'm a member, works closely with the Coast Guard, and occasionally selects some volunteers to go aboard Eagle. Sailing from New London, CT, we covered more than 500 miles of the Atlantic Ocean before putting into Boston, MA, while learning and working alongside Coast Guard officers and crew. In addition to myself and four other Tall Ships America volunteers, about two dozen Officer Candidates from the Coast Guard were aboard, along with several other distinguished guests. From sail handling to climbing the rig, emergency drills to celestial navigation, and sharing meals and stories with the crew and guests, it was the opportunity of a lifetime for this sailor! I'm very grateful to Tall Ships America and the US Coast Guard for the opportunity, as well as for Sheri's continued willingness to say "Ya Gotta Do It!"
