After the weekend storm, local roads were cleared, but a thick
layer of snow and ice blanketed the island. Walking on the snow
leaves no footprints, as it's frozen solid!
ICE, ICE, BABY! Like the
entire region, Avalon & Stone Harbor experienced significant
snowfall combined with cold air temperatures during Sunday's
storm. About six inches of snow fell, but the relatively
warm ocean water and warm air aloft prevented larger snow
accumulations, as onshore winds changed the powdery snow to
sleet, and then to rain. The frozen ground and frigid air
temperatures allowed for only minimal melting, however, before
everything froze into a three-inch layer of ice. Plowing
was more difficult but crews cleared and salted local roads;
shoveling was a challenge, requiring chipping through the heavy
layer of ice. WITH
TEMPERATURES predicted to remain in the 20s during the
day, and in the teens overnight for the next several days, the
snow & ice will remain for a while. Above-freezing daytime
temperatures are not expected until early next week.
TAKE STEPS to protect your
home from frigid temperatures and frozen pipes. Here are
some things you can do: -Close all foundation vents to
prevent frigid air from reaching pipes in the crawl space.
-Set your thermostat to 55 or 60 degrees. -Turn on ceiling
fans to circulate warm air. -For pipes on outside walls, open
cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach the pipes. -Allow a
faucet to drip or trickle. If unsure about protecting
your home and pipes during frigid weather, contact your builder
or plumber for advice.
